Taken from the voluminous photo archives of the AP, the images in the book show the players in action from when they were the turn-of-the-century New York Highlanders to the Babe Ruth era to the Yankees who are vying again this week for post-season glory.
The photos are joined by insightful commentary and a running timeline of major Yankee milestones.
Bouton, an All Star who pitched for the Yankees from 1962-68, is shown in the book's coverage of the 1963 season, during which he earned an outstanding record of 21 wins and 7 losses.
"Baseball and The Associated Press grew up together, and no news organization has covered more of the nearly 400,000 professional games that have been played to date," AP President and CEO Tom Curley says in reference to the newly published book. "Over the course of the last century, the Yankees have come to embody the majesty of the game of baseball. They are a part of Americana. This book is a photographic celebration of the history and heroes the team has created."
The book carries a foreword by former Yankee slugger Don Mattingly.
The Yankees blog River Ave Blues says the book "truly is a marvelous photo retrospective," like having "front-row seats to every Yankee game for decades on end."
The 744-page hardcover edition can be purchased at www.APEssentials.com. Net proceeds from any book bought on that site go to the AP Emergency Relief Fund, set up to aid AP staffers whose families and homes have been affected by natural disasters.
