David Wilkison named AP director of major accounts

NEW YORK (AP) — David Wilkison, Associated Press bureau chief for the Mid-Atlantic region, has been promoted to director of major accounts for the AP’s U.S. newspaper markets.

He joins DMA Jim Reindl in managing business development and serving as AP’s business liaison to national newspapers and large member groups.

The appointment was announced Friday by Sue A. Cross, AP senior vice president for U.S. Media Markets.

Wilkison, 43, guided formation of the new Mid-Atlantic operation in 2006, combining the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan news desks to strengthen coverage throughout the region. In the same period, he also expanded AP’s business in the niche publications market.

Wilkison previously served as regional news director for 16 western and Midwestern states and the State Data Center in Spokane, Wash.

He joined the AP in 1988 in Charleston, W.Va., after graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in journalism. He served as correspondent in Morgantown, W.Va., and Newark, N.J.; news editor in Des Moines, Iowa, and Philadelphia; assistant bureau chief in Philadelphia; and bureau chief in Louisville, Ky.

Richmond, Va., bureau chief Dorothy Abernathy will oversee the Mid-Atlantic operations and membership relations on an interim basis until a replacement for Wilkison is named.
