AP Images launches content API to assist customers

NEW YORK -- AP Images, the commercial photo unit of The Associated Press, today announced the launch of a new distribution system that provides customers a simpler, more efficient way to access AP photographs.

Using the AP’s new content API, customers can find and download AP images using their own editorial tools and interfaces. Instead of searching the AP Images website, the content API allows for seamless integration with customers’ existing systems. It will reduce the time spent on searches and improve users’ workflows.

The launch of the content API for AP Images is part of a larger rollout of the technology, which will eventually support text and broadcast video. Numerous Images customers are already using the content API.

“This is an exciting development because our customers and distribution partners are able to integrate our industry-leading image offering with remarkable ease into their content systems, products and services and digital applications,” said Fernando Ferre, Vice President of AP Images. “AP is committed to satisfying our customers’ image needs and the API is a great way to access AP’s real-time and archival images database.”

Among other benefits, the content API eliminates the need to maintain large storage servers because customers will no longer have to download entire databases of images to access the few they may need. In addition, customers will be able to streamline their publishing processes as well as leverage AP’s rich and accurate metadata to integrate our content into all types of applications. 

It will provide access to a broad range of content, including AP-owned, member-owned and third-party photos, broadcast and animated graphics, and curated photo and graphics collections. The AP Images photo archive contains more than 15 million film and digital images, making it one of the most extensive collections of news and documentary images anywhere.

The launch of the content API is the latest in a line of enhancements and content collaborations designed to underscore AP Images’ standing as a fully comprehensive images business where customers can get everything they need in one place.
