AP Basketball Writer Doug Feinberg used sources developed over years of covering women’s college basketball to obtain closely guarded details of NCAA referee pay.

The result: an unmatched exclusive revealing that half of the Division I conferences paid referees for women’s hoops 22% less on average than they paid officials working men’s games.

Feinberg worked with Assistant Sports Editor Dave Zelio and Top Stories Hub editor Brad Foss on the story, and digital artist Jake O’Çonnell provided graphics. The story, unmatched by other news outlets, was promoted on social media and won strong play nationally with more than 200,000 pageviews.
