Heading into back-to-school season, the Education team wanted to build on its Missing Students project.

The team, consisting of AP education writers Jocelyn Gecker, Bianca Vazquez Toness, Cheyanne Mumphrey, education data reporter Sharon Lurye and education collaborations editor Alia Wong, kicked off another Education Reporting Network data collaboration — the biggest yet — to highlight the issue of high levels of school absences and elevate promising solutions.

AP vetted and obtained exclusive research from USC linking absenteeism to mental health struggles, especially among team girls. The final story centered students and highlighted creative solutions: recess for high schoolers, cash for perfect attendance, rides for kids who miss the bus.

AP shared data and story in advance with 70 local/nonprofit newsrooms — the most ever for an ERN collaboration.
