New England photographer Bob Bukaty had long wanted to photograph the annual Mud Bowl in Conway, New Hampshire. He had a vision for what would happen that was sure to delight. He pitched the story and set out to cover it in all formats, shooting his signature still photographs in a way few others can while also juggling video interviews, b-roll and a text story. The result was an intimate look at a raucous New England tradition that few had seen before, a Sunday afternoon football game played in feet of thick mud. From muddy running backs to sprawled out receivers, Bukaty captured the details and joy in a way that brought readers into the mud, without ever getting their shoes dirty. Bob’s shoes, on the other hand, are still rather crusty.
