The explosive Dec. 10 wildfire in Malibu threatened high-end homes and had most of the students on the campus of Pepperdine University seeking shelter. The Los Angeles crew of Marcio Sanchez and Jae Hong saw this one coming. Years of covering fires and learning fire behavior and wind threats told them that we were going to see a spark up in the overnight hours. Jae and freelancers Ethan Swope and Eric Thayer were “pre-assigned” and when the crew heard that Malibu was at risk, they moved in. The AP was alone on this story for hours in photos and video. The play was impressive, including the Los Angeles Times for a full cycle before they had their own crew in place.
