The massive global spectacle that is the Super Bowl demands an equally massive effort in coverage, and AP delivered for the 59th edition of the event in New Orleans.

A team effort anchored by Sports brought together a collaboration of journalists from Photo, Entertainment, Video, Business News, Lifestyles, Audience, Audio and U.S. News for a comprehensive multiplatform report that took AP’s coverage to new heights and went well beyond the playing field.
The intense coverage built in the days leading up to the game, including a herculean photo undertaking, penetrating package of stories on Black head coaches, as well as lighter fare like features on the Puppy Bowl and an exhaustive stream of guides and explainers. It also highlighted AP’s role in the NFL’s annual player awards with text stories, video explainers and behind-the-scenes video.
On game day, the AP team in New Orleans included sports writers, photographers and video journalists who captured all the news inside and outside of the stadium, illustrating how race, politics and entertainment intertwine with the world of sports.
The team produced three Live Blogs and four main livestreams – the first time AP has done multiple live video feeds on game day – and included a dedicated social video producer on site whose videos scored millions of views on TikTok and other platforms.
The judges called it an exceptional effort.
For their work delivering unparalleled coverage of the U.S.’ premier sporting event across formats and platforms, the team that covered Super Bowl 59 wins this week’s Best of AP – First Winner.
