AP and Healthgrades to provide health information to publishers

The Associated Press has launched a new Digital News Experience (DNE) with Healthgrades — the leading website for guiding Americans to the right doctor, right hospital and right care — to provide newspapers, broadcasters and other publishers with health information for their websites.

AP’s DNE program is designed to provide new revenue streams using ready-to-publish Web content packages. The free program has historically delivered a variety of sports coverage, such as college football, with the AP Top 25 Poll, and now also includes trending health content through two customizable, embeddable widgets that direct traffic to a co-branded AP/Healthgrades website. The new DNE features top content from AP and Healthgrades.

“We are very excited about the new relationship with Healthgrades,” said Fernando Ferre, AP’s vice president of business development. “From a business standpoint, the partnership offers unique health information for our customers’ audiences and enables participating publishers to derive revenue as customers engage with the health widgets.”

“When we first started conceptualizing ways to strengthen our already successful sports DNE program, health was an obvious choice due to the online search habits of the American public,” said Joy Jones, AP’s vice president of products. “People regularly use the Internet to find health tips, disease information, physician ratings and medical news, so we collaborated with Healthgrades to enable DNE participants to offer seamless access to leading health content.”

More than 75 percent of Internet users search for health topics on a weekly basis, and more than 1 million people visit Healthgrades daily. Healthgrades helps consumers find the right doctor by providing highly credible, medically reviewed, comprehensive content on more than 100 topics.

“At Healthgrades, we help consumers connect with the right doctor and right care,” said Brad Graner, president of publisher and advertiser solutions at Healthgrades. “We are thrilled to be joining with AP, the most trusted source of independent news. Now, AP members and millions of Americans will benefit from the combination of our proprietary health content and tools and AP’s timely news.”

To take advantage of this new offering from AP and Healthgrades, DNE participants can log on to the newly enhanced Digital Services dashboard to select, customize and retrieve the embed codes for their widgets. Revenue, earned on a cost-per-click basis, is shared quarterly.
