The massive global spectacle that is the Super Bowl demands an equally massive effort in coverage, and AP delivered for the 59th edition of the event in New Orleans.

A team effort anchored by the Sports department brought together journalists from Entertainment, Business News, Lifestyles, and U.S. News for a comprehensive multiplatform report that took AP’s coverage to new heights—going well beyond the playing field.

Intense coverage built in the days leading up to the game, including an in-depth package of stories on Black head coaches and lighter fare such as features on the Puppy Bowl, along with a steady stream of guides and explainers. The coverage also showcased AP’s role in the NFL’s annual player awards with text stories, video explainers, and behind-the-scenes footage.

On game day, the AP team in New Orleans included sports writers, photographers, and video journalists capturing all the news inside and outside the stadium—illustrating how race, politics, and entertainment intersect with the world of sports.

The team produced three live blogs and four main livestreams—the first time AP has executed multiple live video feeds on game day—and included a dedicated social video producer on site, whose content drew millions of views on TikTok and other platforms.

The judges called it an exceptional effort.

For delivering unparalleled coverage of the U.S.’ premier sporting event across formats and platforms, the team that covered Super Bowl 59 wins this week’s Best of AP — First Winner.
