A collaboration between U.S. News and Philanthropy delivered a moving package timed to the anniversary of the Lahaina fire that killed at least 102 people. AP also got Hawaii Gov. Josh Green to confirm, on-camera, rumors that had been swirling for weeks about a multi-billion-dollar settlement with victims. The advance package featured thematic vignettes by Audrey McAvoy and Jennifer Sinco Kelleher that caught up with some of the wildfire survivors they interviewed immediately after the fire. The vignettes were accompanied by beautiful portraits by Seattle-based photographer Lindsey Wasson.
A second story by Philanthropy Team reporter Gabriela Aoun and McAvoy explained the severe housing challenges that have forced 1,500 locals to move off-island since the blaze and focused on the ways nonprofits are using innovative solutions to address the crisis. That piece included a powerful video by Seattle-based video journalist Manuel Valdes. Behind the scenes, Seattle-based Chief Correspondent Gene Johnson and Pacific Northwest Chief Photographer Jenny Kane worked to polish the photos and text. Chris Keller in Interactives created then-and-now photo sliders of three key Maui locations.
