The devastation caused by flash floods in eastern Spain had to be seen to be believed. The photos and content delivered by the AP were still unbelievable.
From cars deposited in sedimentary clumps in the street to the viewpoint of crying locals scanning the destruction from their windows above, photographer Alberto Saiz gave the world some of the most indelible images of the scene in the immediate aftermath of the flooding. It was one of AP’s strongest days of play for photos of the year.
The flash floods caused by heavy downpours swept through roads to enter houses and businesses, and they arrived in an instant. They caught people unaware, but Saiz managed to find the best position in the epicenter. His images were the most powerful and had the most impact, winning front pages in print and online globally, including The New York Times and the BBC.
In the days that followed, Manu Fernandez, Iain Sullivan, Aitor de Iturria, Hernan Munoz, Joe Wilson and Alicia Leon delivered searing photos, video and text illustrating the catastrophe and the enormous human toll for victims and survivors.
