Italy Paralympics Transgender Sprinter

Daniella Matar led a cross-format team that got an exclusive interview with Valentina Petrillo, the first transgender woman to compete at the Paralympics. Stories about Petrillo emerged several weeks ago as the Paralympics were approaching, but none had any on-camera interviews with her as she prepared for the games. Milan-based sportswriter Daniella Matar arranged a visit with all formats to Petrillo’s training base in Bologna in northern Italy. AP was the only media to interview her there and get video and photos of her training. The story was a collaborative effort from the start between various departments including sports, SNTV, News video, photos and the digital and inclusion teams.
