In exclusive interview, surgeon general recalls how his mom told him to avoid politics. He didn‘t.

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has concentrated his efforts as the “Nation’s Doctor” on mental health, the importance of community, and well-being-- tracing this focus back to his Indian-American upbringing in the Miami suburbs.

When Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared gun violence a public health crisis, he jumped right into the political debate over gun control. Who was this man and why was he taking on such a controversial issue? Amanda Seitz had written several stories on the surgeon general and the reports he issued. So, when she reached out to his office to say AP wanted to do a profile, they agreed — and suggested that she conduct the interview at this childhood home outside Miami and talk to his parents and other relatives as well. We immediately contacted Jim Van Anglen, and he and his team were able to make Rebecca Blackwell available for photos and Daniel Kozin for video. Alex Connor, Sarah Jones Smith and Sophia Tulp helped with a digital plan that put the visuals first. Seitz has a good rapport with Murthy and his office, and she was able to get him to open up about what drives him, using some very personal anecdotes to describe his approach to the job. The story and presentation provided readers with an in-depth view of the “nation’s doctor” and what drives him.
