All eyes were on President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown on Day 1, and AP was ready, having secured exclusive access to front-line enforcement.

AP Homeland Security reporter Rebecca Santana had arranged a ride-along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in New York in December and pushed for another soon after Trump’s inauguration. Pentagon reporter Lolita Baldor fought hard to secure exclusive access to active-duty troops working along the border, beating out requests from competitors.

AP video journalists and photographers worked alongside the team to capture compelling visuals for the multiformat story. Immigration team leader Elliot Spagat joined the tour in San Diego.

AP journalists’ persistence in securing exclusive access for critical stories once again paid off, generating strong customer use and website engagement.
