While in China, Manila-based photographer Aaron Favila’s interest in the music scene led him to explore punk bars in Beijing. Through a Filipino friend and fellow photographer who was deeply involved in China’s punk community, Favila began making connections via WeChat. Soon after, he found himself on a train headed to cover a punk festival in Hangzhou.

Despite a language barrier, Favila’s shared passion for punk music earned him full access to the festival. His photos and video footage reflect the authenticity and energy of the scene, capturing the spirit of a subculture that continues to evolve and resonate with younger generations in China.

Later, in Beijing, Favila joined forces with AP colleagues including Greater China News Director Emily Wang, Wayne Zhang, and Olivia Zhang to cover a veteran punk rock musician. AP photographer Han Guan followed up with another interview featuring a punk band and a bar owner, providing additional insight into the underground movement.

Favila overcame cultural and logistical hurdles to deliver intimate, vibrant visual storytelling that highlights how China’s punk scene is transforming and drawing in a new wave of fans.
