All,

I’m thrilled to announce that we are promoting Nancy Benac to White House editor in the Washington bureau. It will be a seamless transition, as Nancy has filled the role on an interim basis for the last several months. During that time, she’s established herself as an invaluable member of the bureau’s leadership team and worked tirelessly to keep AP in a strong position on one of the most competitive and high-profile beats in the world.

If you’ve spent any time in the Washington bureau, you know there’s pretty much nothing Nancy can’t do. She’s long been one of the bureau’s most talented writers, the kind of reporter who can write about anything and write it well. Her skills as a writer have already been an enormous asset to the White House team, helping elevate both our spot copy and enterprise. Nancy has also been a calming force for her team — she’s simply never rattled, despite the relentless pace of White House coverage and enormous amount of news coming out of the administration.

Nancy has worked for AP for more than 35 years, covering government and politics. She began her AP career as an intern in the New York City bureau in 1980, followed by stints in Detroit and Lansing, Michigan, before moving to Washington as the Michigan regional reporter in 1983. Over two-plus decades in Washington, Nancy has covered a wide variety of beats, including the Clinton White House, and served as political editor for three national election cycles. She was a contributing author to the AP history book, “Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else.” A native of Lombard, Illinois, Nancy is a graduate of Brigham Young University. She and her husband have two children.

Please join me in congratulating Nancy on her well-deserved promotion!

Julie
