Race and Ethnicity team adds 2 journalists
In a memo to staff, Race and Ethnicity News Editor Aaron Morrison announced two new hires to AP’s Race and Ethnicity team:
I am very excited to formally announce that Graham Lee Brewer and Terry Tang have been hired as new Race and Ethnicity reporters, joining AP’s growing team covering identity, culture, politics and justice.
It feels odd saying Terry is new to the Race and Ethnicity team because, over the last few years, Terry has been among the most consistent contributors to AP’s race news coverage. She is widely recognized beyond the AP for producing insightful coverage of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and culture, and for being a go-to for other unique stories on diversity and race.
Terry also has a knack for finding fun stories about race and representation, which is an increasingly important part of this beat. She has done that while fulfilling regular duties covering breaking news in the U.S. Southwest for more than 18 years. Now, she’ll bring her top-notch reporting chops and deep knowledge of the AAPI community to the Race and Ethnicity team full time.
Graham is joining the AP from NBC News, where he was a national investigative reporter. For two years, he pioneered the network’s first and only fulltime beat for the coverage of Indigenous communities and tribal nations.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Graham is one of the nation’s best Indigenous affairs reporters, with more than a decade of journalism experience in a variety of newsroom roles. At High Country News, where he was an associate editor from 2017 to early 2021, Graham helped build the only Indigenous affairs desk at a non-Native national publication in Indian Country.
His journalism about other communities of color has appeared in numerous outlets, including ProPublica, Teen Vogue, BuzzFeed News, The New York Times and National Public Radio.
Graham, who will be based in Oklahoma City, and Terry, who will still be based in Phoenix, both start in their new roles on Dec. 11.
