Will Weissert joins AP’s Washington bureau
Washington Bureau Chief Julie Pace today announced that AP political reporter Will Weissert, currently in Austin, Texas, will relocate to the nation’s capital to cover the 2020 presidential campaign.
Here is her memo to staff:
All,
I’m very happy to announce that Will Weissert, one of AP’s best political reporters, is moving to the Washington bureau to cover the 2020 campaign. His first day in Washington will be April 15.
Will has done standout work in Austin, covering Texas state politics, including the closely watched 2018 Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke. Most recently Will has been covering O’Rourke’s presidential campaign, which he’ll continue to do from his new perch in Washington. He’ll also dig into some of the policy issues animating the campaign, including immigration, which he’s written about extensively during his career.
Will first joined AP in 2000, serving as correspondent in Guatemala City. He then spent six years in the Mexico City bureau and more than three years in Havana, Cuba, where he both reported and helped direct AP’s coverage. His first AP assignment in the United States was in San Antonio, where he was a crucial member of the Drug War team, covering the cartels and escalating violence.
Please join me in welcoming Will to Washington!
Julie
